Womens Center / Elizabeth House
Mission Overview
The Women's Center of Greater Danbury provides free and confidential services to prevent or lessen the trauma associated with domestic violence, sexual assault and other major life transitions.
Located at 2 West Street in Danbury, Connecticut, the Women's Center serves thirteen towns in southwestern Connecticut: Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Danbury, Kent, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield, Roxbury, Sherman, and Washington. Last year the Women's Center provided crisis services and community education to 21,349 women, men and children. 1,400 of these clients were from Ridgefield.
Founded by volunteers in 1975 as a place where women could gather and explore ways to improve their lives, the Women's Center quickly evolved as volunteers responded to community needs. Today, as a professional social service agency, the Women's Center of Greater Danbury continues to rely on the commitment and financial support of its volunteers and members.
The Women's Center provides safe haven and support to women, men and children through its Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Resource Services programs.
Elizabeth House, our shelter for women and children fleeing from the imminent danger of violence in their own homes, offered the safety and support needed in their time of crisis. During their stay, shelter residents received crisis counseling, advocacy and assistance with rebuilding their lives and planning a future that is violence-free.
Becoming Involved
FCC is involved with the Women's Center through providing groceries and gifts during the holidays, and is part of the network that answers emergency needs of the Women's Center and Elizabeth House. An example of this is providing furniture and household items for Elizabeth House residents who are leaving the shelter to move into independent living.
