Mission Overview

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing around the world. Since its founding in 1976 by Millard Fuller, Habitat has built over 150,000 houses in over 89 nations. Habitat for Humanity is often labeled a "hand up" program not a "hand out" since it helps the beneficiaries achieve the dream of homeownership through their own contributions. Each beneficiary is required to contribute "sweat equity" to the building of their home as well as other Habitat homes. In addition, the beneficiary agrees to pay a non-interest mortgage for the home, with the mortgage payments funding other Habitat homes.

First Congregational Church has sent over 75 members in 6 teams to Central America and the Caribbean. Each participant pays their own way so that all funds contributed by the church go toward the costs of building houses. In the past 6 years, approximately 40 homes have been built by the church throughout the western hemisphere and trip participants have not only changed the lives of these families, but experienced the love, wonder and joy by sharing in the lives and love of the beneficiaries experiencing cultures very different than Ridgefield.
