Our History

The First Meeting House

On the 19th of December, 1723 the town meeting voted to build a meeting house on the Village Green. After considerable delay it was decided that the building was to be 46 feet in length and 34 feet in width. A committee was to see that there were good chestnut shingles for the roof and good pine boards for the floor. Finally, in 1731 it was decided to put seats in the front gallery -- two in front, and the rest filled with well - proportioned pews. The side galleries were to be furnished with seats throughout. The town would pay for it all.

(On the 26th of August 1818, the "Edict of Toleration" was passed at a Constitutional Convention in Hartford. This act "disestablished" the Congregational Church as the state church, and, thus, the tax for the support of the Church was abolished).
