Samuel Griswold Goodrich, son of Pastor Samuel Goodrich (1786-1811), became famous as the author of children’s books, writing under the name of Peter Parley. He also charmingly portrayed this early period in the life of the church and town in his 1857 memoir, Recollections of a Lifetime (see p. 24).
“To advance the interests of the Redeemer’s kingdom” – these words appear in the FCC “Confession of Faith” in the 1840s. Church members focused on the gospel’s social implications by contributing to a variety of mission agencies, one of which was the Amistad Committee (see p. 33).
